The farming of fish and other aquatic animals and plants or aquaculture, is an increasingly important rural activity and source of food and income for people living in the Lower Mekong Basin. This paper reviews the status of inland aquaculture in the Lower Mekong Basin countries of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. It identifies key factors shaping aquaculture development and provides recommendations to increase its future importance in food production and rural development in the basin. The paper provides a timely and important review of aquaculture as a significant means of food production and a contributor to rural livelihoods in the Lower Mekong Basin.
