The proposed Variation to the Coastal Plan, with respect to marine farming in the Waikato region includes a requirement to determine whether significant adverse environmental effects occur as a result of marine farm development. As a result of this variation, Environment Waikato requires as part of consent conditions, that environmental monitoring be undertaken during and after development of the farm. This process will identify whether adverse effects are occurring as a result of the marine farm development. This requirement is based on Environment Waikato’s Regional Coastal Plan Proposed Variation – Marine Farming which deals with longline farm structures (16.1 Rules: 4 - Conventional Longline Marine Farm Structures within the Marine Farming Zone), staged development (16.2 Other Methods: 3 - Staged Development of Marine Farms) and information gathering (16.2 Other Methods: 4 - Information Gathering – Marine Farming). A comprehensive programme has been designed to predict the effects and monitor the Wilson’s Bay development as it proceeds. This document outlines the monitoring programme designed for this development. The programme has components covering:
water quality
mussel growth and condition
benthic communities and sediment
currents and wave action
hydrodynamic modelling
biotoxins
