Scottish Shellfish Farms Annual Production Survey

Report of the Scottish Office of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries Department Annual Survey of Shellfish Farms for 1995

Scottish Office of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries

Document format: pdf

Publisher: Scottish Office of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries

Creation date: 1996

This report is based on an annual survey questionnaire of all registered Scottish shellfish farming companies. The cooperation of the shellfish farming industry is gratefully acknowledged. Movement and production forms were sent to 213 companies registered as active prior to the survey. Returns received were 207, the remaining six could not be contacted. Production returns were recorded from 190 companies (Table 1), 15 had ceased trading and two wild mussel fisheries, registered as shellfish farms, were excluded from the report. The survey showed that 109 companies produced shellfish for sale, both for the table and for ongrowing, the remaining 81 companies remained in operation but for various reasons had no sales during 1995. The number of active companies decreased from 196 to 190 since 1994 (from a peak of 229 in 1990). These companies consisted of 315 active sites, of which 185 produced shellfish, a 6% decrease from the 197 registered as productive at the end of 1994.
