Scottish Shellfish Farms Annual Production Survey

Report of the Scottish Office of Agriculture and Fisheries Annual Survey of Shellfish Farms for 1994

Scottish Office of Agriculture and Fisheries

Document format: pdf

Publisher: Scottish Office of Agriculture and Fisheries

Creation date: 1995

This report, is based on an annual survey questionnaire of all registered Scottish shellfish farming companies. The cooperation of the shellfish farming industry is gratefully acknowledged. Production questionnaires were sent to 218 companies registered as active prior to the survey. Returns received were 210 the remaining eight could not be contacted. Production returns were recorded from 196 companies, 14 had ceased trading. The survey showed that 107 companies produced shellfish for sale, both for the table and for on-growing, the remaining 89 companies remained in operation but for various reasons had no sales during 1994. The number of active companies decreased from 205 to 196 since 1993 (the fourth annual decrease from a peak of 229 in 1990). These companies consisted of 324 active sites, of which 197 produced shellfish, a 31% decrease from the 287 registered as productive at the end of 1993. The regional distribution of active farm sites and those companies producing shellfish for sale, is shown in Tables 2 and 3 and Figure 2. Many companies cultivate more than one species on site, made possible because of similar cultivation techniques. Most active sites and areas of greatest employment were focused in the Strathclyde, Highland, Western Isles and Orkney Regions, mainly by part time and casual staff.
