This document provides an extensive discussion of the causes and effects of algal blooms in the coastal waters of Scotland. Particular attention is paid to the connection between algal blooms and various shellfish maladies, including paralytic Shellfish poisoning, diarrhetic shellfish poisoning, and amnesic shellfish poisoning. Eutrophication, the role of anthropogenic nutrients, and the role of aquaculture operations are also discussed.
