Monitoring Compliance with "A Code of Practice to Avoid and Minimise the Impact of Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA)"

September 2001 to September 2002

"A Code of Practice to Avoid and Minimise the Impact of Infectious Salmon Anaemia (ISA)" established recommended best practice to minimise the spread of disease within the Scottish fish farming industry. The code of practice (CoP) was published in August 2000 and every fish farm in Scotland received a copy at the time of implementation.

An ISA CoP compliance survey was initiated in September 2000 to monitor compliance with the recommendations. Fish Health Inspectors complete a survey form during routine fish farm inspections. The information is collated from inspectors' observations and by information supplied by the company or its representatives.

The purpose of monitoring compliance is to: obtain an independent view of the level of compliance, to establish whether the recommendations are being followed voluntarily by the industry, highlight areas within the CoP which require further development and to determine if industry practices are improving.

This report details the level of compliance for the period 1 September 2001- 30 September 2002. In all 422 responses from salmon farms were detailed and comparisons have been made with the level of compliance recorded in last years survey.
