Escaped farm fish have been found among wild stocks in areas close to the farm of origin. Given the right set of conditions, these fish will mate with other farm or wild fish and contribute to the wild genepool. The question that concerns all stakeholders interested in wild fish populations is - Does the incursion of farm fish into a wild stock threaten the viability of the wild stock, or cause a loss of genetic diversity? This paper deals with the genetic aspects of this question, which is limited to the interaction between wild and farm fish of the same species. Specifically, it addresses the following two questions.
Does the incursion impair the wild stocks' ability to compete in its ecological niche or its ability to change as the niche evolves?
Does the incursion threaten the genetic diversity of the stock and ultimately the species?
