Bighead Carp

Nathan Stone, Carole Engle, David Heikes and Donald Freeman

Document format: pdf

Publisher: Southern Regional Aquaculture Center

Creation date: September 2000

In worldwide aquaculture, bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) ranks fourth in production. Bighead were introduced into the southern United States from China in the early 1970s. Because the word "Carp" has a negative connotation to some consumers, alternative names proposed for bighead include "noble fish," "speckled amur" and "lake fish." This document describes the basics of commercial bighead carp production.

Key Words: USDA • SRAC • Bighead Carp • Polyculture • Pond Production
